Unit Standards for Polyethylene Welding

The importance of good installation practices has been recognised by the industry with Water Industry Training Organisation producing draft PE jointing and welding unit standards specific to the water industry.

A significant step up on current PE welding training is that welders will now have their competency recognised by the attainment of unit standards on the New Zealand National Qualification Framework.

Another key change is that welders, employers and clients will be assured that achievement of the unit standards will require trainees to provide evidence of welds and joint tests.  This means competency now includes a greater emphasis on practical experience under real site conditions.

Training Course

New Zealand Water & Environment Training Academy (NZWETA) will be delivering training courses with the support of NZWWA and Water Industry Training Organisation.

Who should attend?

This training is aimed at those working in the Water industry.  We recommend water utility engineers (both local authority and consultants), water and drainage contractors, construction supervisors, and polyethylene suppliers complete this course of study.

Each planned course is of two-day duration with theory and practical for butt fusion, and electrofusion socket and saddle fusion, and mechanical fittings.  Final attainment of the unit standards will be achieved once welding records have been submitted for assessment.

The programme of courses and enrolment information is on the NZWETA web site www.nzweta.org.nz.   If your regular contact for PE Welding training is with NZWWA they will refer you to the new courses underway in August.

Presenter

The presenter is Neil Warner who is a director of his own PE welding company Polyweld Contracting Ltd.  He has 10 years experience as a PE welder and has been part of the industry on determining qualifications on the NZQA framework.  Neil completes thousands of welds every year in all conditions on pipe materials and fittings that cover a wide range of sizes and specifications.  Neil has had input into the training material offering a hands on practitioners approach to welding equipment conditions and specifications in New Zealand.

NZWETA will offer jointly with Water Industry Training a local qualification until the proposed water industry unit standards are formally registered by NZQA.
People who complete all of the course requirements successfully will be issued an interim certificate that can be used to prove competence as soon as the formal unit standards are available.

The material covered with follow the unit standards being developed, namely:

Prepare for, and carry out, jointing of polyethylene pipes up to 250mm diameter by butt fusion welding
Prepare for, and carry out, jointing of polyethylene pipes greater than 280mm diameter by butt fusion welding
Prepare for, and carry out, jointing of polyethylene pipes up to 250mm diameter, and fittings, electrofusion
Prepare for, and carry out, jointing of polyethylene pipes greater than 280mm diameter, and fittings, by electrofusion
Install compression fittings, flanges, and backing ring
Describe polyethylene welding, mechanical joints, repairs to pipelines, and tapping systems

Training Material

The training material has been developed by Dr Jonathan Morris who is a Senior Asset Management Consultant with Opus International Consultants Limited. Jonathan has a background in pipeline materials installation and assessment, and has a doctorate in non-destructive testing. He worked in the Pipeline Technology Group at the UK Water Research Centre for 10 years and then spent seven years with a leading New Zealand risk based inspection company.  Jonathan has considerable experience with Polyethylene technology and use in pipelines in Britain, Europe and New Zealand.  He has developed the training material with the support of best practice PE welding operators in New Zealand.
