The theme ‘Ensuring Water for our Future’ is the key focus for this year’s conference that will also celebrate a half century of achievement. It will include over one hundred presentations across the whole water environment from members and invited speakers. Presentations will be made across three primary streams, plus Modelling and Operations streams, a one day Small Wastewater and Natural Systems stream, and a Backflow Prevention workshop stream. The poster exhibition, New Zealand’s most comprehensive trade exhibition, regional site visits and a full conference social calendar will certainly keep you busy during the three day event! Keynote Speakers
We are proud to announce the Conference Keynote Speakers, who will commence discussion around the theme ‘Ensuring Water for our Future’, including:
Mark Solomon
Kaiwhakahaere of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu
Mark Solomon is Kaiwhakahaere (Chairman) of Te Rünanga o Ngäi Tahu. He was elected to this position in 1998. As Kaiwhakahaere Mark provides leadership for the tribe at a national level. This is a full time, paid position.
Mark is of Ngäi Tahu and Käti Kuri descent. He was elected representative on Te Rünanga o Ngai Tahu for Kaiköura Rünanga in 1995.
In addition to Mark’s role as Kaiwhakahaere he holds, or has held, the following positions:

Paul Pretto
General Manager, Asset Planning, Melbourne Water
Paul Pretto has a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Melbourne and has 15 years’ engineering experience in the water industry, including key roles in research, resource assessment, regulation and large infrastructure planning and management. He has over six years of extensive senior management experience in a variety of roles at Melbourne Water covering large scale planning and strategy development for major water, wastewater and water recycling infrastructure, as well as for water resource assessment and drinking water quality planning and management.
Paul has also spent time consulting in water resources engineering with Sinclair Knight Merz on a variety of projects ranging across both technical and regulatory areas of expertise, as well as time managing the regulatory performance monitoring and assessment of the Melbourne metropolitan retail water companies with the Office of the Regulator-General (now the Victorian Essential Services Commission). As part of his senior management roles at Melbourne Water, Paul has been closely involved with policy development and has played a key role in revising and developing strategies for the innovative provision of water, sewerage and recycling services for metropolitan Melbourne. Paul was appointed to the position of General Manager, Asset Planning, at Melbourne Water in May 2008.
Hon Trevor Mallard
Minister for the Environment
Trevor Mallard is the Minister for the Environment, Minister of Labour, Minister of Broadcasting, Minister for State Owned Enterprises, and Associate Minister of Finance. He is also MP for Hutt South.
His parliamentary career began in 1984. When Labour came to government in 1999 he was given the roles of Minister of Education, Minister of State Services, Minister Responsible for the Education Review Office and Co-ordinating Minister Race Relations – posts he held until 2005 – as well as Minister for Sport and Recreation which he held until 2007 and Associate Minister of Finance which he
still holds. Trevor has also been Minister of Energy, Minister of Economic Development, Minister for the Rugby World Cup and Minister for the America's Cup during Labour's time in government.
